Showing supreme poise under pressure, the Hope College volleyball team pulled off a dramatic 3-1 victory (25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 26-24) over Gustavus Adolphus on Friday at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
The Flying Dutch were tested at every turn in a gritty battle that saw 19 ties and seven lead changes. After storming through the opening set and narrowly dropping the second, Hope relied on unwavering resilience and clutch late-game execution to outlast the Gusties when the stakes were highest.
The match transformed into a thriller in the final two frames, with both sets ending in razor-thin 26-24 finishes in favor of Hope. The third set featured eight ties in a relentless back-and-forth battle, but the Flying Dutch held off a late push from Gustavus Adolphus, sealing the set on a high-pressure service ace by sophomore Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy HS).
Neither team backed down in the fourth set. After Gustavus Adolphus fought back to lock the score at 24-24, Hope stayed disciplined, capitalizing on an opponent attack error before Morrison sealed the set—and the match—with another service ace.
Hope's victory was powered by balanced execution across the court. Junior Angie Butler (Novi, Michigan / Mercy) spearheaded the offense by posting a team-high 11 kills while hitting a sharp .320, while Morrison contributed nine kills and 3 service aces.
Senior middle blocker Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) was an absolute force at the net, putting down 8 kills and racking up 9 block assists, falling just one shy of the program record for blocks in a four-set match.
Sophomore setter Brooke Hehl (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) directed the offense with precision, recording 35 assists to go along with 14 digs, four kills, and seven block assists.
On the backline, senior Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) anchored the defense with a team-leading 18 digs, with sophomore Amelia Gagnon (Belmont, Michigan / Grand Rapids West Catholic) adding 13 digs of her own to keep the Flying Dutch ahead in the match's most critical moments.
Hope continues on in the Coe College-Cornell College Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 19, with two matches against No. 21 St. Olaf College at 10 a.m. CT and Coe at 12:30 p.m. CT.
