Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Women’s Soccer Edged by Case Western Reserve

Saturday's game vs. Ohio Northern has been moved up to 2 p.m.

Junior Alexis Suptela scored her second goal of the season for Hope College women's soccer team, but the Flying Dutch could not overcome an early surge in a 2-1 loss to Case Western Reserve University on Friday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans, who received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches national rankings, scored twice during the first nine minutes and held on for the non-league victory.

Hope settled down after CWRU's early strikes and pulled within a goal in the 69th minute.

Suptela (Palatine, Illinois / William Fremd) took a cross from senior Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) and blasted a kick through the keeper's outstretched hands that deflected under the crossbar. It was Barnard's second assist of the season.

The Spartans (5-1) fended off attempts at an equalizer and finished with a 14-8 edge in shots.

Izzy Probst gave Case Western Reserve a 1-0 lead 2 ½ minutes into the game. Sophie Berman followed in the ninth minute with a nifty steal and score from just outside the penalty area.

Senior keeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made six saves for the Flying Dutch.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. against Ohio Northern University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The game time has been moved up from 4 p.m. because of a stormy weather forecast.
