Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Men’s Soccer Edged Late at No. 10 Lynchburg

The Hope College men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with 10th-ranked University of Lynchburg (Virginia) before falling 2-1 on a goal in the final seconds on Saturday.

Despite sophomore Jackson Mindling's fourth goal of the season, Lynchburg dramatically netted the game-winner from Angelo Romero with 13 seconds remaining.

With 26 seconds left in the first half, Lynchburg (5-1-1) tied the score on a William Casey strike.

The Flying Dutch slipped to 5-1-1 on the season.

"We are disappointed that we couldn't secure a better result that I believe the guys were deserving of," head coach David Blahnik said. "We played a really solid 89 minutes in my opinion. We knew this would be a tough game on the road against perhaps the best team in the country. We will absolutely take a lot away from this game to help us move forward."

Hope grabbed the early lead during the 28th minute.

Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) intercepted a pass from Lynchburg and played a one-touch pass forward to senior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) who played off to junior Ryker Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake).

Corstange heel-rolled the ball back to Jackson for a one-touch shot from 25 yards to the far post. Both Corstange and Walters were credited with assists.

Lynchburg earned an 18-7 edge in shots. Senior keeper Cooper Hutt (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a season-high seven saves.

Hope continues its five-game road trip with games in Ohio and Pennsylvania next week. The Flying Dutch's next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. against Lake Michigan College.
