Volleyball Battles in Tournament Opener, Beating Bethel but Falling to Earlham

The Hope College volleyball team opened its home two-day tournament with two thrilling matches on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse, earning a four-set victory against Bethel University but losing to Elmhurst College in five sets.

The Flying Dutch (8-4) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, with two more matches: noon against Bluffton and 2 p.m. against Carthage College.

Against Bethel, Hope fought off four set points in a decisive third set before claiming a 25-11, 21-25, 29-27, 26-24 victory.

The Flying Dutch scored the final three points of the third set behind two kills from sophomore Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy) and one kill from senior middle hitter Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven).

During the fourth set, Hope overcame an early 9-4 deficit and scored the final two points on a Bethel service error and a kill from freshman middle hitter Maddie Ostrander (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Morrison topped the Orange and Blue with a career-best 18 kills. Burbridge and junior Novi, Michigan (Mercy) added 13 kills apiece. Butler set a career-high against Bethel, which dropped to 10-4.

Sophomore setter Brooke Hehl (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) recorded a career-best 53 assists.

Against Earlham, the Flying Dutch dropped a see-saw match 17-25, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24, 15-11.

Earlham scored three of the final four points in the fourth set. The fifth set featured nine lead changes and eight tie scores before the Quakers used a burst of five points in six serves to take command.

Burbridge's 20 kills were a game-high. Hope outhit Earlham, .192 to .169. The Flying Dutch committed 14 service errors to the Quakers' eight.
