The Hope men's basketball team will have four captains for the 2013-14 season — senior forward Caleb Byers of Allegan (Allegan HS), senior forward Grant Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS), senior center Nate VanArendonk of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) and sophomore guard Ben Gardner of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel HS).
"With great pride, our program is pleased to announce our captains for this upcoming season," Hope coach Matt Neil said. "Caleb Byers, Ben Gardner, Grant Neil, and Nate VanArendonk will represent our program as captains. All four bring different strengths to our program that will allow us to have a cohesive group. All four men have a great foundation of strength to build upon and that is what will drive them this season. They each share the WILL to win, the LOVE for each other, and the PASSION to play the game.
"Relationships will be forged and these four will be the catalysts to making this season special. It is a credit to them as individuals to be recognized as leaders of Hope Basketball."
Byers is majoring in sociology with a criminal justice emphasis.
Neil, also a co-captain on the men's soccer team, and Gardner both are majoring in business management.
VanArendonk is majoring in geology.
The four players join a long and distinguished list of captains for the Flying Dutchmen that dates back to 1901.
