Two 20-point efforts boosted the nationally ranked Hope women's basketball team to an 82-57 win at Olivet on Tuesday.
Junior forward Rebekah Llorens of Grayslake, Ill. (Grayslake Central HS), and sophomore forward Maura McAfee of Midland (Midland HS) both scored 20 points to lead the Flying Dutch.
Hope improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. The Flying Dutch have beaten on the road the second and third-place teams in the MIAA preseason poll to start league play.
Llorens also grabbed a season-high and game-high 12 rebounds.
McAfee came within one rebound for her fourth consecutive double-double. She also contributed three steals and two assists in 30 minutes.
"Our post players were very, very good," Hope coach Brian Morehouse said. "You have to throw Mandy Traversa in there. She killed it from the outside and got a few putbacks there. Fifty-four of our 82 points came between those three.
"They played championship level of basketball tonight. I thought they did a great job defending Stefanie Lang. They made her touches difficult. She was averaging 35. They held her 14 under her average. That's pretty good defense. Bekah and Maura played with a high motor. They understand the importance of playing hard."
Traversa, a freshman from Winfield, Ill. (Wheaton North HS), chipped in 14 points off the bench.
Hope jumped to a 13-2 lead in the first six minutes against Olivet (2-1, 0-1 MIAA). The Flying Dutch went on to lead 39-25 at halftime.
