Box Score
The Hope College women's soccer team clinched an outright Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship by defeating Kalamazoo 2-1 on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The Flying Dutch avenged their only league loss to raise their record to 14-3-1 overall and 13-1-1 in MIAA play. They also secured the top seed and home-field advantage for next week's league tournament.
Hope has four MIAA titles so far — the most in a single fall season since the 2005-06 school year.
Freshman Allie Wittenbach of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS), struck first with 2 minutes, 59 seconds remaining in the first half. She placed a shot over the outstretched arms of Kalamazoo goalie Lucy Mailing and into the top corner of the net.
Wittenbach's sixth goal of the season came from 18 yards out.
Senior Lindsey Bieri of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), stretched Hope's lead 4:51 into the second half. Bieri, pictured, beat Mailing in the upper corner from 15 yards out after converting a center from sophomore Sarah Fazio of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS).
It was Bieri's fourth goal of the season.
Goalie Kat Dickson of Grayslake, Illinois (Grayslake HS), made four saves for the Flying Dutch. She only allowed a Madison Moote goal in the 62nd minute.
Hope joins the 2004 and 2003 teams as outright MIAA champs. The Flying Dutch were co-champs in 2005.
Hope wraps up the regular season on Monday, Nov. 3, with Senior Night against Calvin. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The Flying Dutch will play either Albion or Alma in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
