Hope Men's Basketball Tops Mount Union For Sentinel/DeVette Classic Title

Center Brock Benson scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Hope College men's basketball team past Mount Union (Ohio) 79-71 in the championship game of the Holland Sentinel/Russ DeVette Classic.

The sophomore from Willowbrook, Illinois (Hinsdale South HS), led a six-player, all-tournament team that included teammates Alex Eidson and Ben Gardner.

The Flying Dutchmen extended their win streak to four games while improving to 5-3 overall.

Benson went 8-of-9 from the field for the game and grabbed four rebounds.

Gardner, a junior guard from Carmel, Indiana (Carmel HS), netted 17 points, including a 9-of-10 effort from the foul line.

Eidson, a junior guard from Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), chipped in 13 points and a game-high three assists.

Hope never trailed in the second half after taking a 36-29 halftime lead.

The Flying Dutchmen outscored Mount Union 22-8 at the foul line with 31 attempts to Hope's 12.

This was the 26th DeVette Classic and 15th Holland Sentinel Community Tournament.

The Russ DeVette Classic honors longtime Hope College basketball coach Russ DeVette, who guided the Flying Dutchmen to more than 300 victories from 1948-1977. Coach DeVette died on November 23, 2009, at age 86.

Hope is 44-8 all-time in the Russ DeVette Classic with 18 tournament championships.
