The Hope College men's tennis team opened the season Friday by hosting the West Michigan Indoors Doubles Tournament at the Dewitt Tennis Center.
Coach Steve Gorno's Flying Dutchmen had four doubles teams compete in three flights. Junior Jonathan Panzer of Rockford (Rockford HS) and freshman Sam Kreps of Holland (Holland HS) won the challengers flight with a 3-0 record.
In the championship match, Panzer and Kreps defeated teammates Chris Tippett of Flushing (Flint Powers Catholic HS) and Ben Johnson of Brighton (Hartland HS) 8-4. Tippett and Johnson went 2-1 for the tournament.
Hope's No. 2 doubles team of Trevor Brogan of East Lansing (East Lansing HS) and junior Cody Herbruck of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Central HS) posted a 1-2 record at the varsity flight. Brogan and Herbruck defeated Cornerstone's Sanitago Macrey/Andrew Son 8-6 in the first round.
Hope's No. 1 doubles team of senior Parker Bussies of Zeeland (Zeeland West) and senior Colin McKay of Stevensville (Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) went 0-3 in the championship flight.
