The Hope College baseball team played its fifth one-run in as many games this season but lost 3-2 in eight innings to Allegheny (Pa.) College on Monday in Winter Haven, Fla.
The Flying Dutchmen fell to 1-4 on the season. The scheduled nine-inning game was shortened due to lightning.
Sophomore pitcher Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), took the loss in his first start of the season. He scattered five hits and three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Two of the runs were earned. Chipka struck out six and walked one.
The Flying Dutchmen scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior first baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wis. (West HS) delivered a RBI single for Hope, while junior leftfielder Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, Calif. (El Toro HS), had a RBI groundout.
Hope returns to action on Tuesday, March 18, with a scheduled nine-inning game against Clarkson (N.Y.).
