The Hope College baseball team lost to Clarkson (N.Y.) University 5-1 on Tuesday in Winter Haven, Fla.

Senior catcher Eric Vachon of Sterling Heights (De Sa Salle Collegiate) homered in the ninth inning for Hope (1-5 overall). He went 2-for-4 to lead the Flying Dutchmen' s five-hit attack.

Losing pitcher Phil Haywood (0-1) scattered five hits and two runs over six innings. The senior from Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) struck out five and walked two. 

Clarkson added insurance runs with two in the eighth inning and one in the ninth.

The Flying Dutchmen continue their spring trip on Wednesday, March 19, when they play Springfield (Mass.) and Ripon (Wis.) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
