Leftfielder Devin Schaefers totaled four hits to lead the Hope College baseball team in a 7-3 win against Babson (Mass.) on Thursday in Winter Haven, Fla.
The Flying Dutchmen closed their spring break trip on a two-game win streak and now are 3-6 overall. They are scheduled to host Trine in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Against Babson, Schaefers, of Lake Forest, Calif. (El Toro HS), doubled in sophomore second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo (Parchment HS) in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1.
Hope took the lead for good at 3-1 in the sixth when rightfielder Josh Kranz of Carpentersville, Ill. (Jacobs HS), singled in Schaefers and centerfielder Tim Bodine singled home Kranz and first baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wis. (West HS).
Bodine finished with three RBIs. Schaefers had two, including a ninth-inning, run-scoring single. Kranz collected three hits.
Winning pitcher Ty Van Wieren of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) scattered five hits and one run over six innings. Van Wieren, a freshman, struck out three and walked one.
