The Hope College baseball team ended its recent frustration with one-run games, winning two of them Friday to sweep a doubleheader from Calvin College.
The Flying Dutchmen won 5-4 and 3-2 at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids to pull even with Adrian College atop the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings.
Eight of Hope's 13 games this season have been decided by one run. The Flying Dutchmen's record in them is 3-5.
Hope (6-7 overall, 3-1 MIAA) and Calvin (7-6, 2-3) play two more times at Cornerstone again on Saturday, March 29, beginning at noon.
In Game 1, reliever Matt Glowacki preserved the win by stranding the game-tying run at third base. The sophomore from Goodrich (Goodrich HS) retired Peter Cupery on a popout after relieving starter Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS).
Chipka (1-1) scattered six hits and four earned runs over 6 2/3 innings.
The Flying Dutchmen snapped a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth with a three-run rally that included RBIs single from third baseman Mitch Monocchio of Glen Ellyn, Ill. (Glenbard West HS), and centerfielder Tim Bodine of Gurnee, Ill. (Warren Township HS).
In Game 2, Glowacki picked up his second save of the day and season by closing out the Knights with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Freshman Ty Van Wieren of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) improved to 2-0 with 5 1/3 innings of work that featured five hits and two runs allowed.
Hope grabbed a 3-1 lead by scoring three runs in the sixth, one of which was earned.
Sophomore designated hitter Colton Curtiss of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS) started the rally with a RBI single that plated junior rightfielder Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, Calif. (El Toro HS).
Second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo (Parchment HS) then scored when the Knights mishandled the hit to third of third baseman Eric Dawson of Grand Haven (Midland HS). Junior first baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wis. (West HS), walked with the bases loaded to drive home Curtiss for a 3-1 lead.
