The Hope College baseball team made the most of an unexpected road trip. The Flying Dutchmen topped Trine 4-2 and 3-0 on Monday after the games were moved to Angola, Ind., because the field at Hope's Boeve Stadium was unplayable.
Hope (10-7 overall) pulled even with Adrian College atop the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings with 7-1 records. The 2013 MIAA co-champions play each other in a four-game series this weekend.
Junior Matt Chema (1-0) secured the sweep — and Hope's sixth win in four days — by firing a four-hit shutout. The lefthander from Grand Blanc (Grand Blanc HS) walked two but stranded four runners.
The Flying Dutchmen supported Chema despite totaling three hits.
One of them was a RBI double from centerfielder Tim Bodine of Gurnee, Ill. (Warren Township HS), that snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Bodine later scored in the inning on a passed ball.
Hope tacked on a third run in the sixth when a sacrifice fly from senior shortstop Alex Hunt of Holland (West Ottawa HS) drove in seniot third baseman Eric Dawson of Grand Haven (Midland HS).
In the first game, first baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wis. (West HS) broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth by lacing a three-run triple down the left-field line.
Second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo (Parchment HS) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
