Box Score 2 The Hope College baseball team is tied for third place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings after earning a split at Kalamazoo College on Saturday.
The Flying Dutchmen won Game 2 4-1 to avoid a four-game sweep in the series. They dropped Game 1 on Saturday 10-3.
In the nightcap, winning pitcher Ty Van Wieren (3-1) tossed a complete game with five hits allowed and three walks issues. The freshman from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) also struck out three and allowed only a second-inning run.
Hope (13-13, 9-7 MIAA) snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning.
A two-out, two-round double from second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo (Parchment HS) started the rally. VanderWeele scored on a RBI triple from sophomore designated hitter Colton Curtiss of Zeeland (Zeeland East).
Senior catcher Eric Vachon of Sterling Heights (De La Salle Collegiate) added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
In the first game, Hope fell behind 4-0 after giving up two runs in each of the first two innings.
The Flying Dutchmen received a solo home run and a RBI single from Vachon.
Losing pitcher Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio, (Anthony Wayne HS), allowed 10 hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings.
