Box Score 2 Devin Schaefers delivered a sixth-inning, go-ahead RBI single to help the Hope College baseball team earn a split with Albion College on Friday at Boeve Stadium.
Schaefers, a leftfielder from Lake Forest, Calif. (El Toro HS), knocked in first baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wis. (West HS), with the decisive run in a 4-3 win in Game 2 of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader. Albion edged Hope 3-2 in Game 1.
The Flying Dutchmen (14-14 overall) slipped into third place in the MIAA with a 10-8 record. They trail second-place Calvin College by one game.
In Game 2, Hope overcame a 2-0 deficit after two innings with a three-run third.
Senior catcher Eric Vachon of Sterling Heights (De La Salle Collegiate) doubled in designated hitter Colton Curtiss of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS) for the Flying Dutchmen's first run. Vachon then scored when the Britons mishandled Josh Kranz's grounder to short.
Centerfielder Tim Bodine of Gurnee, Ill. (Warren Township HS) added a RBI single that knocked home shortstop Alex Hunt of Holland (West Ottawa HS).
Winning pitcher Austin Goodyke of Grandville (Calvin Christian HS) scattered eight hits and three runs (two earned) over 6 1/3 innings. Goodyke (3-2) struck out one.
Reliever Eric Plaehn of Lansing (Catholic Central HS) recorded the final two outs for his second save.
In the first game, Albion struck three times after the fourth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
Losing pitcher Currey Thomas of Grandville (Grandville HS) allowed eight hits and three earned runs in a complete game. Thomas (3-4) struck out five.
Hunt and Bodine had run-scoring hits for Hope.
