Two fifth-place finishes in the javelin highlighted the Hope College men's and women's track & field teams' first day at Grand Valley State University's Al Owens Invitational on Friday.
Senior Matthew Johnson of White Lake (Orchard Lake Saint Mary's Prep) placed fifth in men's javelin with his toss of 165 feet 4 inches, while sophomore Jane Pearson of Lake City (Northern Michigan Christian HS), pictured, also took fifth with a heave of 107-04.
The Flying Dutchmen and Flying Dutch are both in eighth place after three events. The Flying Dutchmen have five points in their 11-team event, while the Flying Dutch have 4 ½ points in their 14-team event.
The meet concludes on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
Hope also finished eighth in the men's and women's triple jump.
David Dolfin of Hingham Wis. (Ootsburg HS), leapt 42 feet, 8 ¾ inches, while senior Caitlin Schwark of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton-Warrenville HS) went 33-1 ¾.
