Box Score 2 The Hope College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Alma College on Saturday by winning 7-1 and 6-3 at Alma.
The Flying Dutchmen improved their record to 18-18 overall and 14-10 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
Hope is one game ahead of fourth-place Kalamazoo College, which hosts league-leading Adrian College on Sunday.
In the second game, winning pitcher Phil Haywood of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) tossed a complete game. Haywood (2-1) scattered four hits and three runs over seven innings. He struck out six and walked two.
Five different players recorded RBIs for Hope, including catcher Eric Vachon of Sterling Heights (De La Salle Collegiate HS) and rightfielder Josh Kranz of Carpentersville, Ill. (Jacobs HS), during a three-run first.
Leftfielder Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, Calif. (El Toro HS), went 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
In the first game, winning pitcher Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), also went the distance. Chipka (3-3) allowed six hits and one run while striking out two.
Hope snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles from second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo (Parchment HS) and Vachon.
Vachon added a two-run single in the sixth.
Hope wraps up MIAA regular-season play with a four-game series next week at Olivet College.
