Box Score The Hope College baseball team lost 5-2 to Calvin College on Wednesday in the first game of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Flying Dutchmen (21-20 overall) will play either Kalamazoo College in an elimination game Thursday at 3 p.m. at Adrian College's Nicolay Field. Kalamazoo lost at Adrian 17-1 on Wednesday night.
Against Calvin, Hope struck first with a run in the top of the first inning.
Junior Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), reached on a fielder's choice and scored three batters later on a two-out single from senior rightfielder Josh Kranz of Carpentersville, Illinois (Jacobs HS).
Calvin (27-14) grabbed a 2-1 lead with two runs in the second inning on a two-run double from catcher Kyle Spoelma.
The Knights extended their lead against Hope starter Currey Thomas of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS), with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Senior centerfielder Tim Bodine of Gurnee, Ill. (Warren Township HS), scored an unearned run in the eighth. Calvin mishandled a groundball from Hope second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), to third — allowing Bodine to come home.
Thomas (5-5) tossed his sixth complete of the season and the 12th of his career. He moved into sole possession of seventh place all-time in Flying Dutchmen history. He is tied for eighth for complete games in a single season.
