The Hope College baseball team closed the 2014 season with a 10-3 win against Kalamazoo College and a 5-3 loss to Calvin College on Thursday in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament at Adrian College.

The Flying Dutchmen finished the season with a 22-21 record.

Hope rode a two-run, first-inning homer from sophomore second baseman Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) and a 15-hit attack past Kalamazoo.

Senior third baseman Eric Dawson of Grand Haven, Michigan (Midland HS), went 3-for-5 with a RBI triple against Kalamazoo, while junior leftfielder Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), also collected three hits and totaled two RBIs.

VanderWeele's homer plated senior centerfielder Tim Bodine of Gurnee, Ill. (Warren Township HS), and put Hope ahead for good at 2-1.

Winning pitcher Austin Goodyke of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS), went the distance. Goodyke (4-3) scattered nine hits and one earned run over nine innings. He struck out three.

Against Calvin, the Flying Dutchmen could not hold onto a 2-1 lead taken in the first inning on RBIs from VanderWeele and senior outfielder Josh Kranz of Carpentersville, Illinois (Jacobs HS).

Calvin snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run home run in the seventh. 

Losing pitcher Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), allowed 10 hits and five runs in seven innings. Chipka (4-4) struck out one and walked two.
