Forward Josh Hagene, pictured above, scored two goals to lead the nationally ranked Hope College men's soccer team to a 3-2 win against North Central (Illinois) College Friday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
A crowd of 1,222 saw the Flying Dutchmen win their first match in the Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational. No. 21 Hope hosts No. 8 Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. Ohio Wesleyan lost at Calvin College 2-1 on Friday in the other Bergsma tournament match.
Hagene extended Hope's lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute when he struck from 20 yards out. His shot glanced off the right goalpost and into the net.
The sophomore from Caledonia, Michigan (East Kentwood HS) scored the Flying Dutchmen's first goal off a breakaway in the 24th minute. An assist went to junior David Porte of Mattawan, Michigan (Mattawan HS).
Hagene was one of Hope's top goalscorers last season. He tied for third on the team as a freshman with six goals.
Against North Central, Hope's other goal came from junior forward Preston Jaenichen of Elkhart, Indiana (Concord HS), in the 34th minute for a 2-0 lead. Junior midfielder Andreas Slette of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) had the assist.
Junior goalie Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) picked up the win after making two saves.
