Freshman Tyler Gulick hit his team-leading third home run of the season, but the Hope College baseball team settled for a doubleheader split with Trine on Tuesday.
The Flying Dutchmen gave up a three-run sixth inning for a 4-3 loss on Tuesday at Boeve Stadium after taking the opener 11-3.
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series finale was moved to Hope because of unplayable field conditions in Angola, Indiana.
Hope (7-4 overall) and Trine (6-8) are two of four teams tied for third place in the MIAA with 2-2 league records.
In Game 1, Gulick gave the Flying Dutchmen the lead for good with a three-run blast to leftfield. The centerfielder from East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), knocked in first baseman freshman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), and third baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wisconsin (West HS).
Gulick finished with four RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded during a three-run seventh.
Senior second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), went 2-for-5 with three RBI. His two-run homer in the fourth plated junior catcher Nick Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), and was Schaefers' first home run of the season.
Junior shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), smacked his second homer of the season with a solo blast in the third.
Winning pitcher Austin Goodyke (2-1) allowed eight hits and three runs during his complete game. The junior from Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS), struck out two and walked one.
In Game 2, Trine struck out for three runs in the bottom of the sixth for its only lead of the day.
Reliever Coty Franklin of Vermontville, Michigan (Maple Valley HS), took the loss after yielding three hits and being charged two runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Pearson had a two-run double to lead Hope.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Thursday when they host Calvin for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Boeve Stadium.
