The Hope College men's lacrosse team beat Defiance, Ohio, 24-3, on Wednesday at Van Andel Stadium for the Flying Dutchmen's second-most goals in a match in their three-season varsity history.
Sophomore Gunnar Elder of East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), topped Hope with a career-high seven goals during the nonleague game. Elder, pictured, matched Caleb Digison for third place in the Flying Dutchmen's single-game annals.
The team record for goals in a game is 27 against Dubuque, Iowa, on March 29, 2014, while the individual record of 8 is shared by Digison (vs. Calvin on April 23, 2014) and Josh Kamstra (vs. Wilmington on March 18, 2013).
Hope improved to 3-6 on the season.
Junior Parker Osterink of Longwood, Florida (Seminole HS), chipped in four goals for the Flying Dutchmen.
Five different players had two goals apiece: junior Taylor Dever of North Barrington, Illinois (Lake Zurich HS), junior Sam Hansel of Wheaton, Illinois (Glenbard West HS), sophomore Ty Miedema of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS, freshman Grant Brogan of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), and freshman Mike Odea of Naples, Florida (Barron Collier HS).
Goalie Joey Williams of Farmington Hills, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS), made one saves to earn the win.
Hope returns to action on Saturday when the Flying Dutchmen begin MIAA play with a 1 p.m. match at Trine.
