Six-Run Inning Propels Hope Baseball To Doubleheader Split At Kalamazoo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

A six-run second inning propelled the Hope College baseball team to a 6-5 win at Kalamazoo College on Friday and a split of their doubleheader.

The Flying Dutchmen rebounded after dropping Game 1 by a 2-1 margin when Kalamazoo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Hope is now 11-11 overall and 6-8 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutchmen host Kalamazoo (13-9, 10-4) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Boeve Stadium.

In Game 2, Hope sent 11 batters to the plate and capitalized on two errors to grab a 6-0 lead.

Senior third baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wisconsin (West HS), started the rally with a one-out sacrifice fly.

Sophomore rightfielder JP Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), followed with a RBI single. Junior shortstop of Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), then delivered a two-run single.

Freshman centerfielder Tyler Gulick of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), and senior designated hitter Luke Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), each contributed run-scoring singles.

Winning pitcher Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), scattered six hits and four runs over five innings. Junior reliever Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), recorded the final four outs for his first save.

In Game 1, the Flying Dutchmen could not make Brower's sixth-inning sacrifice fly that plated Gulick stand up.

Kalamazoo rallied with an RBI double and a two-out, walkoff sacrifice fly off starting pitcher Currey Thomas of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS).

Thomas (2-3) allowed eight hits and two unearned runs. He struck out seven.
