Box Score 2 Jake Chipka pitched a complete game, and Tyler Gulick homered to help the Hope College baseball team split with MIAA co-leader Adrian College on Friday at Boeve Stadium.
Brady VanderWeele also extended his hitting streak to 19 games as the Flying Dutchmen won Game 2 by a 7-3 margin after dropping the opener 2-1.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Adrian. Hope is now 10-7 overall and 5-5 in MIAA play, while Adrian is 15-6 overall and 8-2 in MIAA action.
Chipka (2-2) allowed six hits and three runs. The junior from Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wagner HS), struck out four and walked two for his first complete game of the season.
Gulick gave Chipka a 2-1 lead with a two-run blast in the second. The freshman centerfielder from East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), plated junior leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS) with his team-leading fourth homer of the season.
The Flying Dutchmen tacked on an unearned run during the third and four more runs in the fourth for a 7-1 lead.
The fourth-inning rally that featured a RBI double from senior second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), run-scoring singles from freshman first baseman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), and VanderWeele, and a sacrifice fly from sophomore rightfielder JP Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS).
VanderWeele's hitting streak has 17 games this season and two from last season.
In the opener, Hope was edged after a solo homer in the top of the seventh from Adrian third baseman Matt Andrus snapped a 1-1 tie.
The game featured complete games by Hope's Currey Thomas (2-2) and Adrian's Eric Schmidt.
Thomas yielded eight hits. The senior from Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS), struck out six.
A RBI double in the first from junior designated hitter Luke Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), accounted for Hope's run.
The Flying Dutchmen are tied for third place in the MIAA with Albion and Trine. Adrian remained tied with Kalamazoo, which split with Albion on Friday.
