Hope College's Erin Herrmann made history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday during the MIAA Field Day at Albion College.
The sophomore from Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS), gave the Flying Dutch their first MIAA champion in the event while also becoming the first non-Calvin runner to win the race since its debut in 2003.
Herrmann helped Hope finished second in the overall standings with 194.93 points. Calvin (286.5) won.
Herrmann clocked a winning time of 11 minutes, 13.83 seconds. She was seven seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Calvin had won every women's steeplechase race since the event debuted at Field Day in 2003.
The Flying Dutch claimed two more wins during Friday's second day.
Junior Jane Pearson of Lake City, Michigan (Northern Michigan Christian HS), heaved a first-place javelin toss of 118 feet, 11 inches. It was her second victory of the meet after earning the long jump title on Thursday.
Sophomore Sierra Schultz of Kellogg, Iowa (Grinnell Community), won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.68. She beat four Calvin runners to the finish line.
Hope placed second and third in the 400 meters: Freshman Rachel Satkiewicz of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Seaholm HS), in second at 58.41 and senior Katie Afton of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Portage Central HS) in third at 59.51.
The Flying Dutch won the 4x400 relay with Jane Pearson, Katie Afton, Emma Ropski and Rachel Satkiewicz posting a time of 3:57.24.
Hope was runner-up in the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.47.
Junior Casey Campbell of Swartz Creek, Michigan (Swartz Creek HS), clocked a third-place 1,500-meter time of 4:41.94. Herrmann was sixth at 4:56.47, while senior Katherine Hauge of Edina, Minnesota (Minnehaha Academy) was eighth at 4:57.07.
Junior Julia Stock of Norton Shores, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), came in third in the 5,000 meters at 18:19.56. Campbell was fifth at 19:07.99.
Freshman Alison Rich of Haslett, Michigan (Haslett HS), was third in the javelin at 109-6.
Pearson posted a third-place, 100-meter hurdle finish of 15.68. Rich was sixth at 16.07.
Pearson took fourth in the 200 meters at 26.01. Satkiewicz came in fifth at 26.05, while freshman Rachel Anderson of Muskegon, Michigan (Mona Shores HS), was eighth at 27.20.
Anderson and Schultz finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 meters at 13.29 and 13.36.
Hope scored three in the 800 meters: sophomore Emma Ropski of Park Ridge, Illinois (Maine Township HS), in third at 2:17.11, Freshman Rachael Webb of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS), in fifth at 2:19.13, and freshman Alexis Guttilla of St. Charles, Illinois (Westminster Christian HS), in seventh at 2:25.45.
The rest of the MIAA standings featured Alma (90) in third, Adrian (67), in fourth, Albion (57) in fifth, Trine (49) in sixth at Olivet (29.66) in seventh.
