Box Score 2 Coty Franklin fired 5 2/3 innings of one-run relief to help the Hope College baseball team rally for a doubleheader split at Olivet on Saturday and tie for third place in the final MIAA standings.
The Flying Dutchmen won Game 2 by a 5-3 margin after dropping the opener 3-1.
Hope finished the regular season with a 22-17 overall record and a 15-13 mark in MIAA play that matched Kalamazoo for third place.
The Flying Dutchmen have qualified for next week's MIAA Tournament. They will be the third seed and open at No. 2 seed Calvin on Wednesday.
In Game 2, Franklin (2-1) took over for starter Ty Van Wieren of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), in the second inning.
Franklin yielded five hits and a seventh-inning run. The junior from Vermontville, Michigan (Maple Valley HS), struck out five.
Hope grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth on a RBI double from junior designated hitter Luke Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), and a run-scoring groundout from sophomore rightfielder JP Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS).
The Flying Dutchmen added a fifth-inning run on a sacrifice fly from senior second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), and a RBI single from junior shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS).
Hope's first run came on a second-inning sacrifice fly by third baseman Ben Pearson of Madison, Wisconsin (West HS).
In Game 1, pitcher Austin Goodyke went the distance, but was a tough-luck loser after yielding six hits and two earned runs in six innings.
The junior from Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS), fell to 4-4 on the season. He walked two and struck out one.
Hope scored the first run of the game on a RBI groundout from junior leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS), that plated VanderWeele.
