Reliever Matt Glowacki fanned the only batter he faced, stranding two runners to preserve a 7-6 win for the Hope College baseball team at Calvin Wednesday in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament.

The third-seeded Flying Dutchmen (23-17 overall) advanced to a noon second-round game Thursday at top-seeded Adrian (23-5).

Glowacki, a junior from Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), struck out Jeff Murdock looking in the bottom of the ninth inning after Calvin had pulled within a run and had runners on first and second. It was Glowacki's second save.

Calvin matched Hope's four-run ninth with a four-run rally of its own against starting pitcher Currey Thomas of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS), and reliever Coty Franklin of Vermontville, Michigan (Maple Valley HS).

The Flying Dutchmen extended their lead to 7-2 on a rally that started with a two-run triple from All-MIAA second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS).

Schaefers, a senior, then scored on a RBI double from junior leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS).

Konkle also scored when the Knights misplayed Luke Brower's grounder to second.

Hope built a 3-0 lead with singles runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Junior catcher Nick Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), and Schaefers each delivering RBI singles.

Thomas (4-5) scattered 11 hits and five runs allowed over eight innings. He struck out four and walked four.

Calvin will play Kalamazoo in a 3 p.m. elimination game at Adrian.
