The 1980s are remembered as a fond decade for Hope College men's basketball.
The Flying Dutchmen won 178 of 224 games and claimed seven Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships during the decade, including a run of five in a row from the 1980-81 season through 1984-85.
Hope College will honor players from the 1980s this Saturday during the men's basketball game against Kalamazoo College. Tipoff is 3 p.m. At halftime, returning players will be introduced to the DeVos Fieldhouse crowd.
Hope's players from this decade excelled in the classroom as well, retired head coach Glenn Van Wieren proudly recalls.
"During those years, every kid that played varsity basketball graduated. That is a really great thing," Van Wieren told The Holland Sentinel. "These guys I am so proud of them. These guys had great experiences at Hope. They loved basketball and were good at it. They graduated and are making a difference."
