Box Score 2 The Hope College baseball team swept Trinity, Connecticut 3-2 and 11-6 on Friday in Winter Haven, Florida to start its annual spring trip.
The Flying Dutchmen improved their record to 4-1 overall.
In the opener, Hope overcame a 2-0 deficit with a three-run sixth. Leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS) delivered a go-ahead, two-run single that knocked in shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) and centerfielder Jonathan Sojka of Glen Ellyn, Illinois (Glenbard West HS).
Konkle's hit came one batter after rightfielder JP Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) had a RBI groundout to score second baseman Andrew Zawacki of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS).
Reliever Eric Plaehn of Lansing, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central HS) struck out both batters he faced in the top of the sixth to earn the win. Right-hander Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS) picked up his first save with a 1-2-3 seventh.
In the nightcap, Hope erupted for a season-high 11 runs on 11 hits.
The Flying Dutchmen started fast with a six-run top of the first. Konkle began the rally by hitting a RBI double that brought home Batts.
Nicholas Holt of Muskegon, Michigan (Muskegon Catholic Central HS) followed with a RBI triple that plated Konkle. Holt then scored on a wild pitch.
Second baseman Michael Barnett of Saline, Michigan (Salein HS) added a run-scoring single to bring in third baseman Nicholas Lepore of Clinton Township, Michigan (Warren De La Salle HS). Catcher Nick Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS) then came home on a fielding error, while Barnett scored on a wild pitch.
Hope never trailed. Barnett finished with a team-best two RBIs.
Starting pitcher Austin Goodyke of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS) won his first start. He allowed nine hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, March 19 with a single game against Springfield, Massachusetts.
