Two Hope College golfers carded eighth-place 79s to lead the Flying Dutch to a third-place finish after the opening round of the 36-hole Wisconsin-Whitewater Spring Fling on Friday.
The Flying Dutch shot a team score of 327 at the 15-team event to share third place with Olivet Nazarene. They trail first-place Wartburg, Iowa by 12 strokes and Carthage, Wisconsin by 10.
Saturday's final round tees off at 9 a.m. Central.
Junior Britni Gielow of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) and sophomore Megan Klintworth of Jackson, Michigan (Hanover-Horton HS) shared low-round honors for the Flying Dutch. Seventy-eight golfers are in the field.
Sophomore Nicole Meyer of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton HS) carded an 84. She is tied for 24th.
Sophomore Megan Wierenga of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian HS) shot an 85. She is tied for 28th place.
Senior Morgan Leep of Caledonia, Michigan (South Christian HS) had an 86.
