Four rounds in the 70s on Friday at The Ravines propelled the Hope College women's golf team to a commanding second-round lead at the MIAA NCAA Division III Championship qualifier.
The Flying Dutch shot a school-record score of 311 to claim a 34-stroke lead over second-place Saint Mary's heading into Saturday's finale of the 54-hole event.
Play begins on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. at The Ravines. The cumulative winner advances to next month's NCAA Championships.
On Friday, sophomore Megan Wierenga of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian HS). fired the low round of the day with a 4-over-par 76.
Sophomore Nicole Meyer of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton) placed one stroke behind Wierenga with a 77.
Hope rounded out its scoring with two 79s: junior Britni Gielow of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) and sophomore Megan Klintworth of Jackson, Michigan (Hanover-Horton HS).
Senior Morgan Leep of Caledonia, Michigan (South Christian HS) carded an 84 for the Flying Dutch.
The 311 team more bested Hope's previous best of 315 shot in the fall of 2014.
The Flying Dutch have a 36-hole total of 637. Hope is ahead of Saint Mary's (671), Olivet (685) and Trine (692).
