The Hope College women's golf team took the first step on Tuesday toward improving on its 11th-place at last year's debut at the NCAA Division III Championship.
The Flying Dutch shot a team score of 326 to sit ninth out of 21 teams after the first round of the 72-hole, four-day tournament in Houston, Texas.
Hope tees off the second round on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. Central. Texas-Tyler leads at 15-over.
Two Hope golfers shot 6-over-par 78s to lead the Flying Dutch: junior Britni Gielow of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) and sophomore Megan Klintworth of Jackson, Michigan (Hanover-Horton HS).
Gielow and Klintworth are tied for 20th in the individual standings.
Sophomore Nicole Meyer of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton HS) chipped in an 82 for the Flying Dutch.
Senior Morgan Leep of Hastings, Michigan (South Christian HS) rounded out Hope's scoring with an 88.
Sophomore Megan Wierenga of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian HS) had a 94 for the Flying Dutch.
