Hope Baseball Rallies, Edges Adrian On Senior Day Finale With Walkoff Error

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

An errant throw rolled into right field, and the Hope College baseball team jubilantly celebrated a Senior Day win for the Flying Dutchmen.

The Flying Dutchmen beat MIAA champion Adrian 11-10 on Saturday at Boeve Stadium to clinch the third seed in next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

Hope (22-16 overall) is now 17-10 in MIAA play. Alma (27-13) clinched the second seed by sweeping Olivet for an 18-10 league record. The Scots own the tiebreaker edge over the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope will play at Alma in the first round on Wednesday, while Adrian will host Kalamazoo in the other opening game. After Wednesday, the MIAA Tournament will shift to Adrian for the remaining games until the winner of the MIAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament is determined.

Prior to that, the Flying Dutchmen must complete a game with Albion suspended on April 30 because of rain. They will finish up at Hope Monday beginning at 1 p.m.

Shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth after Adrian threw away potential inning-ending double play on a grounder by leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS). It was scheduled to be a nine-inning game.

The Bulldogs retired pinch-runner Jonathan Sojka of Glen Elynn, Illinois (Glenbard West HS) at home on the play for the second out, but VanderWeele crossed home plate with the walkoff win after the error.

Hope overcame three deficits to split their doubleheader with Adrian. The Bulldogs won the opener 11-8.

Konkle went 2-for-6 with a solo home run and three RBI in the nightcap. He raised his school-record number of RBI to 57 and his school-record number of hits to 62.

Konkle is batting .473 on the season. The school record of .471 belongs to Jim Klunder (1987).

Sophomore first baseman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) also collected two hits and three RBI. He followed Konkle's homer to center in the firs with one of his own.

Reliever Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS) tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Glowacki (2-1) struck out one and walked one.

Glowacki, Konkle and VanderWeele were among 10 seniors honored between the first and second games. They were joined by players Luke Brower, Jake Chipka, Coty FranklinNick Glowacki, Austin Goodyke, and Mitch Reitsma, and student assistant coach Kyle Berneciak.
