Box Score A sixth-inning grand slam handed the Hope College baseball team an 8-5 loss to Albion Monday at Boeve Stadium in the completion of a suspended game.
The Flying Dutchmen (22-17 overall) finished Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with a 17-11 league record that ties them for third place with Kalamazoo.
Hope will be the No. 3 seed for this week's MIAA Tournament. The Flying Dutchmen open postseason play Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game at second-seeded Alma.
On Monday, Hope started with a 5-4 lead and Albion batting with one out in the bottom of the third inning.
Neither team scored until the bottom of the sixth.
Reliever Eric Plaehn of Lansing, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central HS) yielded two singles before exiting with two hits. Ronnie Williams followed with a single off reliever Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS) that loaded the bases.
Pinch-hitter Steven Marowski then hit a grand slam over the left field to put Albion (15-25, 8-20 MIAA) ahead.
When the game started on April 30 at Albion, second baseman Michael Barnett of Saline, Michigan (Saline HS) and shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) both had two-run singles in the top of the second for a 4-2 Hope lead.
