Junior Nicole Meyer of Brighton, Michigan (Brighton HS) carded a 7-over-par 79 to lead the Hope College women's golf team to the first-round lead at the 36-hole Trine Spring Classic Friday at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Indiana.
Meyer topped a field of 44 golfers with a round that included nine pars and one birdie. She finished one stroke ahead of Cleary's Virginia Gilton.
Hope recorded a team score of 331 to put the Flying Dutch 16 strokes ahead of second-place Cleary and Saint Mary's, Indiana in the seven-team event.
The final round begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
Senior Megan Wierenga of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) is tied for first after shooting an 82.
Senior Britni Gielow of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores) and junior Megan Klintworth of Jackson, Michigan (Hanover-Horton) are tied for seventh after 85s.
Senior Elena Moore of South Lyon, Michigan (East) is tied for 17th after a 92.
Senior Dominique Molinaro of Burtchville, Michigan (Port Huron Northern) is tied for 19th after a 94.
Host Trine (359) is in fourth. The rest of the field features Trine's B team (375), Albion (379), and Calvin (383).
