Box Score A goal 3 ½ minutes into sudden-death overtime handed the Hope College men's lacrosse team its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association loss of the season with a 17-16 defeat to Olivet Saturday.
On Senior Day, the Flying Dutchmen fell out of first place in the MIAA after Tyler Polendo scored with 1 minute, 15 seconds remaining in the first four-minute overtime period. Hope is now 9-4 on the season and 4-1 in MIAA play.
Olivet (6-5 overall) is tied for second place with the Flying Dutchmen. Alma and Trine are both one game back with 3-2 league records.
Senior attacker Gunnar Elder of East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) led Hope with four goals and four assists.
Elder's 33 assists are the second-team in team history - trailing only his 35 last season.
Elder's man-up goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation gave the Flying Dutchmen a 16-14 lead. Olivet, however, struck twice to even the score and forced overtime on Zach Sanders' goal with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter.
Both teams had two possession in overtime before Olivet scored.
The Flying Dutchmen honored Elder and fellow seniors Chris Bosscher of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central) and Zach Weber of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) in a pre-game ceremony.
Hope's next match is Tuesday, April 25 at MIAA leader Albion.
