Women's Track & Field In Second After MIAA Field Day Opener

Jessica Gaines and Alison Rich took second place in two events to lead the Hope College women's track & field team on Thursday at the 126th Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day.

They helped the Flying Dutch to a second-place score of 35 points. The two-day competition at Calvin College concludes on Friday.

Gaines was one of two Hope runners to score in the 10,000 meters. The senior from Sterling Heights, Michigan (Utica Academy) clocked a time of 37 minutes, 42.30 seconds.

Senior Emily Joosse of Chillicothe, Ohio (Zane Trace) was sixth at 38:35.20.

Junior Alison Rich of Haslett, Michigan (Haslett) placed runner-up in the high jump by clearing 1.56 meters (5-2).

Junior Haley Fischman of Grand Ledge, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central) came in third in the discus with a toss of 37.49 meters (123-0).

Freshman Mitchel Achien'g of Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu) took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.10 meters (16-9).

Junior Rachel Alford of Snohomish, Washington (Archbishop Murphy) finished sixth in the hammer throw with a heave of 40.02 meters (131-3).

In preliminaries, Hope qualified four runners for the 800-meter final: senior Erin Herrmann of Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton-Warrenville South) in first at 2:19.81, junior Alexis Guttilla of St. Charles, Illinois (Westminster Christian) in second at 2:21.70, junior Rachael Webb of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville) in sixth at 2:24.02, and freshman Chelsea Miskelley of Holland, Michigan (Black River) in seventh at 2:21.03.

In the 400 meters, two Hope runners advanced to the final: junior Rachel Satkiewicz of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Seaholm) in second at 59.46 seconds, and freshman Nicole Kruithof of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) in seventh at 1:01.52.

Satkiewicz placed fifth in the 200-meter preliminaries at 26.38 seconds.

Rich qualified seventh for the 100-meter hurdles final with a run of 15.77 seconds.

Freshman Hannah Huizen of Jenison, Michigan (Jenison) took eight in the 100-meter qualifying by posting a time of 13.03 seconds.

Calvin is in first place with 62 points. Hope is second and followed by Trine (34), Albion (31), Adrian (14), Olivet (10) and Alma (8.5).
