Hope College's Timothy Roe, pictured, rallied for a three-set victory at No. 3 singles for the decisive point for the Flying Dutchmen tennis team in a 5-4 nonleague win against Earlham, Indiana on Saturday at DeWitt Tennis Center.
The junior from Bakersfield, California (Frontier HS) recorded a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win against Nicola Manni in the final match of the evening.
Hope improved to 1-3 overall. Earlier in the afternoon, the Flying Dutchmen lost to NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University 9-0.
Against Earlham (3-1), Hope earned three points in singles play and two in doubles.
At No. 2 singles, sophomore Danny Kroeze of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) topped Alexsandr Sergeev 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4.
At No. 4 singles, freshman Carter Smiley of Minnetonka, Minnesota (Minnetonka) beat Vojislav Tatarevic 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, Hope's No. 1 pair of Smiley and junior Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) topped Vitalii Stadnyk and Tatarevic 8-4.
At No. 2 doubles, Kroeze and junior Justin Folkert of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton) beat Sergeev and Jason Lawson 9-7.
