Women's Track & Field Wins First MIAA Indoor Team Title on Meet's Final Event

A tired but determined Rachel Satkiewicz would not let the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association indoor championship elude the Hope College women's track & field team.

Running her third race of the day, Satkiewicz passed Albion College on the final leg of the meet's last event — the 4x400 relay — to secure a third-place finish that made the Flying Dutch outright league champions.

Hope finished the third-ever MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a winning total of 131.5 points. Head coach Kevin Cole's Flying Dutch edged runner-up and meet host Trine by 1.5 points and third-place Albion by 3.5 points for their first MIAA title in the sport.

"We were behind the entire race. Albion knew too, so they were running an incredible race — staying just ahead of us," head coach Kevin Cole said. "Rachel caught them right toward the end. Everyone was exhausted. Rachael Webb was running second and that was her third race of the day too. But everyone gave it their all to the end. It was pretty cool."

Sophomore Nicole Kruithof of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian HS), Webb, a senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville), sophomore Chelsea Miskelley of Holland, Michigan (Black River), and Satkiewicz, a senior from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Seaholm), clocked a 4x400 relay time of 4:08.40.

The Flying Dutch topped Albion by 1.92 seconds.

Hope crowned MIAA champions in two events and set school records in others.

Sophomore Addyson Gerig of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) took first in the high jump by clearing 1.55 meters (5-1). She came with one-hundredth of a meter of the MIAA record.

Gerig was one of four high jumpers to score for the Flying Dutch: senior Alison Rich of Haslett, Michigan (Haslett) in fifth at 1.50 meters (4-11), freshman Hannah Bredeweg of Zionsville, Indiana (Zionsville) in sixth at 1.45 meters (4-9), and junior Allison VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) in eighth at 1.40 meters (4-7).

Hope won the distance medley relay. Junior Alicia Bostwick of Zionsville, Indiana (Community), sophomore Hailey Pickelheimer of Powell, Ohio (Olentangy Liberty), senior Alexis Guttilla of St. Charles, Illinois (Westminster Christian), and junior Avery Lowe of North Muskegon, Michigan (North Muskegon) clocked a run of 12:45.68.

The Flying Dutch established school records in the triple jump, long jump and the 5,000 meters.

Sophomore Mitchel Achien'g of Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu) won the long jump with a fourth-place leap of 5.14 meters (16-10 1/2).

Gerig finished fourth in the triple jump with a school-record leap of 10.58 meters (34-8 ½). She passed Marina Milad's mark of 10.55 meters (34-7 ¾) from 2016.

Junior Emily Hamilton of Naperville, Illinois (North) broke the school record in the 5,000 meters with a second-place finish of 17 minutes, 54.93 seconds. She edged the 2016 mark belonging to Julia Stock of 17:55.34.

"We have a lot of depth and people just scoring points all over the place," Cole said. "With a meet like that, you look back on it and wonder where did we score those two points that gave us the meet. Honestly, everybody can claim to that. It's a really cool victory when you think of it that way."

Rich took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a run of 9.64 seconds. Achien'g placed in fifth at 10.03.

Webb led four Hope runners to score in the 800 meters with a second-place effort of 2:20.10. She was followed by Miskelley in third at 2:23.45, Guttilla in fourth at 2:24.83, and sophomore Sophia Vander Kooy in eighth at 2:28.06.

Webb also topped four Flying Dutch who scored in the 1-mile run. She was third at 5:14.83 and followed by Lowe in sixth at 5:28.57, sophomore Sarah Neumar of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron) in seventh at 5:28.95, and Bostwick in eighth at 5:30.26.

Satkiewicz came in third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.82.

Hamilton recorded a third-place, 3,000-meter effort of 10:38.67. Sophomore Anna Frazee was seventh at 10:49.03, while Lowe was eighth at 10:49.21.

Achien'g finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with a run of 8.20 seconds.

Achien'g also placed fourth in long jump with a leap of 5.14 meters (16-10 ½). Rich was sixth at 5.08 meters (16-8).

Sophomore Emma Johnson of Wentzville, Missouri (Timberland) came in fifth in the pole vault by clearing 2.85 meters (9-4 ¼).

Senior Haley Fischman of Grand Ledge, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central) tossed a sixth-place shot put of 11.23 meters (36-10 1/40.

Fischman and senior Rachel Alfond came in seventh and eighth, respectively, in the weight throw with tosses of 12.88 meters (42-3 ¼)  and 12.64 meters (41-5 ¼).

Satkiewicz finished seventh in the 200 meters with a run of 27.18 seconds.
