Mason Opple's two-run homer and a season high-matching, 15-hit attack powered the Hope College baseball team to a 13-1 victory against Thomas, Maine on Monday in Auburndale, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen bounced back after a late rally gave Elmhurst, Illinois a 7-5 victory earlier in the day.

Against Thomas, Opple, pictured, went 2-for-4 with two RBI, his first home run of the season and a triple. The sophomore from Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS) homered in a three-run sixth that gave Hope a 5-0 lead.

Centerfielder Evan Maday of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood) topped the Flying Dutchmen by going 3-for-6 with two runs scored. He tripled and doubled as Hope totaled five extra-base hits.

Besides Opple, three other Flying Dutchmen players drove in two runs apiece: shortstop Jordon Fairchild of Muskegon, Michigan (Oakridge), third baseman Brant Kym of Libertyville, Illinois (Libertyville) and first baseman Hayden Smith of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton).

Winning pitcher Sam Balke of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern) scattered two hits and one unearned run over 5 ⅔ innings of work. He struck out again and walked two.

Against Elmhurst, Maday had a two-run triple for the Flying Dutchmen. Fairchild had a team-high two RBI.

Elmhurst scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.

Hope is now 2-5 on the season.
