Freshman Max Gaishin picked up his first collegiate win on the mound for the Hope College baseball team in a doubleheader split at Calvin College on Monday.
The Flying Dutchmen won 10-2 in Game 1 behind Gaishin's pitching but lost the second game 6-2 in the series finale.
Gaishin, pictured, scattered six hits and one run in 6 1/3 innings of work. The lefthander from Stevensville, Michigan (Lakeshore HS) struck out six.
Hope jumped out to a 10-0 lead with three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh.
Leadoff batter and centerfielder Evan Maday of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. He led off the fourth with a single and came home on an RBI single by third baseman Danny Carrasco of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian).
Designated hitter Tanner Gilmore of Murrieta, California (Alta Loma HS) capped the rally with an RBI single.
Maday also led started the five-run seventh. He singled, stole second and third bases, then crossed the plate on a Carrasco single. Carrasco finished with two RBIs.
In Game 2, Hope never led after falling behind 4-0 in the bottom of the first.
Maday homered and went 2-for-4. He tops the Flying Dutchmen with a .436 batting average.
Rightfielder Mason Opple of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) added a sacrifice fly in Hope's final at-bat of the scheduled nine-inning game.
Both Hope and Calvin are 4-10 overall and 2-2 in MIAA play.
