Freshmen Max Gaishin and Ted Eppinga stepped to the mound and made the pitches the Hope College baseball team needed for a sweep of Olivet College on Monday.

The Flying Dutchmen won the makeup doubleheader 4-0 and 7-2 at Boeve Stadium and moved into a tie for second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings.

Gaishin and Eppinga both threw six scoreless innings. The Flying Dutchmen took the four-game series with three wins while improving to 5-3 in MIAA play and 7-11 overall.

In Game 1, Gaishin (2-1) blanked Olivet on four hits. The lefthander from Stevensville, Michigan (Lakeshore HS) struck out a season-high nine and walked four.

Hope took advantage of five Olivet errors to score two unearned runs, including the first of a three-run sixth. Centerfielder Evan Maday of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood) and shortstop Jordon Fairchild of Muskegon, Michigan (Oakridge) capped the rally with a run-scoring triple and double, respectively.

Reliever Sean Hoey of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) completed the shutout by retiring three of the four Comets he faced in the seventh.

In Game 2, Eppinga yielded five hits and one walk in the scheduled nine-inning game. The righthander from Saline, Michigan (Saline) struck out two for his first collegiate win.

The Flying Dutchmen jumped out a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Fairchild's two-run homer and a sacrifice fly from first baseman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian).

Maday delivered an RBI double in the seventh, then scored on a balk. Designated hitter Trace Slancik of Scotts, Michigan (Vicksburg) added a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Catcher Codey Houts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) scored in the eighth on a delayed steal.
