Baseball Edged By Adrian In MIAA Tournament Championship Game

Box Score

It took an eighth-inning rally and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's top pitcher to stop the Hope College baseball team's bid for a tournament title.

The Flying Dutchmen fell 3-2 in Friday's championship game after host Adrian scored late and retired three of the final four batters it faced.

Hope finished the 2018 season with an 18-24 record after winning four of its final six games.

Adrian (33-10) broke a 2-2 tie with a leadoff single by Zach Zschering in the bottom of the eighth and a one-out, RBI double by Brady Wood two batters later.

Reliever Tommy Parsons — the MIAA's Most Valuable Pitcher — took over on the mound in the ninth and retired three of the four Flying Dutchmen he faced for his first save of the season.

Catcher Trace Slancik of Scotts, Michigan (Vicksburg) reached on a two-out error, but Parsons registered a strikeout for the final out.

Hope briefly held a 2-0 lead on a one-out, two-run double by second baseman Brant Kym of Libertyville, Illinois (Libertyville) that scored designated hitter Nick Lepore of Clinton Township, Michigan (Warren DeLaSalle) and leftfielder Jonathan Sojka of Glen Ellyn, Illinois (Glenbard West).

Adrian pulled even with a two-run fifth that included a Tristin Richardson RBI groundout and a Justin Torrento run-producing fielder's choice. The Bulldogs rallied after Hope loaded the bases in its half of the inning, but did not score.
