Men's Soccer Erupts For Five First-Half Goals, Wins At Marymount (Virginia)

Box Score

Isaac Braak poses for a portrait Isaac Braak needed less than two minutes to get the Hope College men's soccer team on the scoreboard.

His teammates — many of them – soon joined him.

The 21st-ranked Flying Dutchmen marched to a 6-0 non-league win at Marymount University on Friday in Arlington, Virginia, behind five first-half goals from five different scorers.

Hope upped its record to 8-0 - the best team in team history since the 1996 Flying Dutchmen opened with a 15-0-1 record.

The six goals matched a season-high for Hope.

Braak, pictured, a junior from Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) struck 1 minute, 53 seconds into the first half. It was his second goal of the season.

Five minutes later, senior Devon Butler of New Baltimore, Michigan (Anchor Bay) recorded his first goal of the season for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen then scored twice in a span of 34 seconds beginning with a goal from freshman Ryan Flynn Bloomington, Illinois (Normal) with 13:34 remaining in the half. Flynn joined junior Logan Bylsma of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) atop the Hope leaders with his fifth goal.

Junior Jordan Hooker of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) then followed quickly with his second goal of the season. Freshman Brett Dyer of Northport, Michigan (Northport) earned Hope's first assist of the game.

Sophomore Jack Elwell of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern) capped the Flying Dutchmen's eruption with 6:40 remaining before halftime. The assist on Elwell's first goal this season went to Hooker.

Hope closed the scoring with 1:43 remaining in the second on Dyer's second goal of the season. Freshman MJ Francisco of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern) had the assist.

The Flying Dutchmen's sixth shutout of the season was shared by goalies Blair McCormick of Wadsworth, Illinois (Warren Township) and Joey Weber of Buckley, Michigan (Buckley).

McCormick made the only save Hope needed to make against Marymount (0-8).

The Flying Dutchmen complete their road trip on Saturday with a 5 p.m. match at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware.
