2019 HOPEYs Nominees: Male Exceptional Individual Performance

Presented to the athlete who had the best performance in an individual event in a given year.

* Andrew Caris, Men's Lacrosse – During the semifinal game of the 2018 MIAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament against Alma, Caris held the MIAA Offensive MVP and three-time first team All-MIAA player to zero goals and zero assists. It was a dominating defensive performance for the Flying Dutchmen as they went on to beat the Scots 8-7.

* Dan Clyde, Men's Swimming & Diving – On the second night of the 2019 MIAA Swimming & Diving Championships, Clyde won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:57.51. This performance garnered him a NCAA B-cut time. Clyde's time in the event took down a nine-year-old school mark of 3:57.71, as well as a MIAA meet record of 4:00.24. It now stands as the fastest time in MIAA history.

* Jason Beckman, Men's Basketball – Beckman scored a season-high and game-high 38 points in the Flying Dutchmen's 94-92 victory over Alma. This victory for Hope moved them into a third-place tie in the MIAA standings with one week remaining in the regular season.

* Mason Opple, Football – In a 35-30 Homecoming victory over Olivet, Opple rushed for a career-high 244 yards on a career-high 27 carries. He also set a record for the Flying Dutchmen as Opple ran for more yards than any quarterback in Hope College history. With this performance, Opple was selected as the quarterback of the D3football.com Team of the Week and earned him recognition as the MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week.

* Trace Slancik, Baseball – In a key victory over Adrian in the 2018 season, Slancik belted a two-out, two-run walk-off homer for the Flying Dutchmen. He finished the game 4-5 at the plate. Hope won 11-9, and this win secured a berth for Hope in the MIAA tournament.

* Justin Freeman, Men's Track & Field – At the 2018 Emory Invitational, Freeman sprinted to a time of 10.56 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He broke the school record and at the time, this performance was the fastest time of the season in NCAA Division III. Freeman finished the 2018 season ranked seventh in all of NCAA Division III.
