2019 HOPEYs Nominees: Male Newcomer of the Year

* Evan Maday, Baseball – During his freshman season, Maday started all 42 games for the Flying Dutchmen. He hit .373 and led the team in several offensive categories. Maday was named to the All-MIAA first team.

* Terrell Solberg, Men's Track & Field – During his freshman season, Solberg immediately became one of the top 200-meter and 400-meter runners for the Flying Dutchmen. At the 2018 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, he ran to a third place in the 400-meter run and was member of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed second. Solberg finished in fifth place in the 400-meter run and led off the school-record setting 4x400-meter relay at the 2018 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

* Tim Roe, Men's Tennis – In his first year with the Flying Dutchmen, Roe played an integral role in the success of the men's tennis program. He finished the season with a 5-1 record in conference doubles and he went 6-1 in conference singles. Roe was named MIAA men's tennis player of the week in May 2018.

* Grant Williams, Men's Swimming & Diving – Williams transferred to Hope this year and made an immediate impact with the Flying Dutchmen. He was the league champion in 3-meter diving at the 2019 MIAA Swimming & Diving Championships, after defeating the three-time defending champion. He set three team records this season: 1-meter six dives, 1-meter 11 dives, and 3-meter six dives. Williams also qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.

* Toby Hulst, Football – As a freshman, Hulst started at safety seven of the 10 games and played in every game in the 2018 season. Hulst compiled 13 solo tackles and 15 assists for a season total of 28.0 tackles. He also had two tackles for loss. Hulst was a significant contributor to a defense that allowed the fewest points, passing yards, and rushing yards in MIAA play this season.

* Stephen Holpuch, Men's Lacrosse – In his freshman season, Holpuch contributed to the second-ranked defense in the NCAA in 2018. As a defensive midfielder, Holpuch locked down his matchups, and grabbed 37 ground balls, which helped to spark transition for the Flying Dutchmen's offense. Over the course of the season, Holpuch had only one turnover.

* Nick Hoffman, Men's Cross Country – As a freshman, Hoffman was a top-seven runner for the Flying Dutchmen at the 2018 MIAA Cross Country Championships and he competed at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. Hoffman was named a scholar All-America Recipient by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Association for having a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 and finishing in the top 25 percent of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
