2020 HOPEYs Nominees: Male Athlete of the Year

Max Kuiper, Men's Lacrosse — Kuiper helped the Flying Dutchmen win the 2019 MIAA Championship and the MIAA Tournament Championship for the team's first NCAA Division III tournament appearance. During MIAA play, Kuiper recorded the third-most assists with 13 and tied for the fourth-most goals with 16. He received All-MIAA First Team honors for the second consecutive season.

Mason Opple, Baseball, Men's Basketball, Football — Opple contributed to three sports for the Flying Dutchmen this past year. During the 2019 baseball season, Opple earned All-MIAA First Team honors and was named an All Region third-team outfielder in the Mideast Region by d3baseball.com. He is Hope's all-time baseball leader in career runs batted in with 121 runs over 129 games. As the quarterback for the football team, Opple was named the MIAA MVP and earned All-MIAA First Team honors. He recorded career-highs with 1,598 yards passing and 16 touchdown passes. He did not throw an interception all season. Opple also played in 19 games for the men's basketball team, averaging 10.4 minutes per game off the bench. He contributed 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. 

Joshua Gibson, Men's Golf — During the 2018-19 season, Gibson led the Flying Dutchmen to the MIAA Championship, the MIAA Tournament Championship, and a ninth place finish at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship. Gibson was national runner-up at the 2019 NCAA Championships and received All-American Honors. He was named the recipient of the MIAA Deal Award, which recognizes a senior male student-athlete who has excelled in academics and athletics while displaying outstanding leadership qualities. For the second year in a row, Gibson received the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2019 as the NCAA Division III National Player of the Year with a season stroke average of 71.0 strokes.

Josh Izenbart, Men's Track & Field — Izenbart qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the decathlon and finished in 16th place. At the 2019 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, Izenbart won the javelin with a toss of 48.89 meters (159 feet, 1 inch) and earned All-MIAA honors. He also received All-Region honors in the decathlon for being one of the top-5 individuals in the event in the region. Izenbart had to miss the 2020 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships due to a funeral, but was named MIAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Week this season and had top performances at three other indoor meets this year. 

Preston Granger, Men's Basketball — In 14 MIAA games this season, Granger averaged 22.8 points for the Flying Dutchmen and 9.5 rebounds. He shot 61.0 percent from the field against league opponents. Overall, Granger averaged 20.8 points and 8.0 rebounds over 25 regular-season games. In the game against Trine, Granger became the 42nd player to reach 1,000 career points in a Hope uniform. He scored 1,000 points in 73 career games. Granger was named to the All-MIAA First Team and also received Third Team Great Lakes Region honors from D3Hoops.com.
