2020 HOPEYs Nominees: MIAA Championship Performance

Men's Lacrosse — In the 2019 MIAA Tournament championship final, then-freshman long-stick midfielder Brayden Blackburn scored the go-ahead goal for Hope with 3 minutes, 57 seconds remaining. The Flying Dutchmen then sealed the 6-5 victory by forcing an Albion turnover in the closing seconds, despite being a man down due to a penalty. It was the first MIAA tournament title in team history.

Women's Tennis — After the 2019 Hope College women's tennis team went undefeated as a team in regular-season play, with the Flying Dutch posting an overall match record of 71-1 in singles and doubles against MIAA opponents, Hope blanked both Calvin and Kalamazoo, 5-0, in the MIAA Tournament to qualify for its eighth consecutive NCAA championship.

Women's Track & Field — The Hope College women's track and field teams ran, threw and jumped to MIAA success in 2019 and 2020, whether indoors or outdoors. At the 2019 MIAA outdoor championships, the Flying Dutch claimed their second consecutive league title in dominating fashion, scoring 73 points more than the nearest competitor. The 2020 indoor team competed in much the same way: Winning the MIAA title, its second in three years, by totaling 76.5 points more than the second place team.

Women's Cross Country — For the fifth year in a row, the Hope College cross country team ran to an MIAA championship. The Flying Dutch posted the lowest score of 32 points while the second-place team from Calvin University was 17 points back with 49. Hope clocked seven of the fastest 19 times.

Football — In its last regular season game, the Hope College football team claimed an outright MIAA title for the first time since 2006 by beating Adrian College, 42-7. The Flying Dutchmen outgained Adrian, 531-343, including a 375-98 edge in rushing yards as running back Kenyea Houston blasted his way to a career-high 189 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Hope's other four touchdowns were scored by Connor Mellon (2), Christian Bos (1) and Mason Opple (1 rushing, 1 passing). The Flying Dutchmen ended MIAA play with a perfect 7-0 record.

Women's Basketball — In the MIAA tournament, the Hope College women's basketball team was victorious in the semifinals against Calvin University (78-46) and in the finals against Trine University (59-55). The Flying Dutch defeated both teams for the third time in the season. Hope outscored Calvin 27-4 in the second quarter for a 49-15 halftime lead. The team did not allow a field goal to Trine and gave up just three points to the Thunder over the final seven minutes of play.
