2020 HOPEYs Nominees: Exceptional Performance in an Individual Sport

Mitchel Achien'g, Women's Track & Field — At the 2020 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Achien'g won the 60-meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. She set MIAA records in both the 60-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Achien'g also finished third in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash. She scored 40 points for the Flying Dutch and was named the MIAA Most Valuable Indoor Field athlete for her performance at the championship. 

Liz Pniewski, Women's Tennis — Pniewski won her singles match against Case Western in 2019 with the score of 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. Her win helped Hope clinch a 5-4 victory over #15 nationally-ranked Case Western. 

Nick Hoffman, Men's Cross Country — At the 2019 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championship, Hoffman earned First Team All-Region honors. In the 8K (5 mile) race, he finished with a personal best time of 24 minutes, 50 seconds. This was one minute faster than his previous best time. 

800-Yard Freestyle Relay, Men's Swimming & Diving — The men's relay team of Bailey Smith, Dan Clyde, Gabe Boonstra and Daniel Keith won the event at the the 2019 MIAA Championships and broke a 27-year-old school record with a time of 6 minutes, 42.17 seconds. This was also a new MIAA record and this swim qualified them for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. 

Joshua Gibson, Men's Golf — At the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship, Gibson earned individual honors as national runner-up with a four-day total of 287 strokes. He finished the match at 1-under par (72-71-73-71) and was only one of two golfers who came under par.

Justin Freeman, Men's Track & Field — Freeman won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash and anchored the winning 4x100-meter relay at the 2019 MIAA Outdoor Championships. His times in the 100-meter and 200-meter broke both the school and MIAA records and were ranked in the top ten times in the nation. He was named the MIAA Most Valuable Outdoor Track athlete for his performances at the meet.
